By picturesque banks of the Daugava and the Pērse, only 100 km form Riga, is Koknese. In ancient times it was an important traders and craftsmen’s center, the Hansa city. Today known as a cultural and heritage place.

Koknese still attracts with the magnificent nature, the breath of history which is carefully stored in the old park and the mighty castle walls, which now is surrounded by the water of Pļaviņas reservoir that had transformed all the landscape beyond recognition…

Manor house you will see the places where Edgars and Christina’s love story started. Depending on the activities of Pļaviņu hydroelectric power station ,by lowering the water level in the water storage of the river Daugava to the maximum, you can see the uncovered castle foundations of the walls and rocks,and the stony bluffs of the Daugava ancient valley.

Koknese ruins.

In 1209 the bishop Alberts ordered to build a stone castle in the place of the ancient castle. During the Northern War the castle was blown up and later wasn’t renewed. Until 1966 the castle was located high on the hill but, flooding the reservoir of Pļaviņu HES, the castle mound was flooded.
