The Holy Spring is ina lateral ravine of the Gauja valley. The spring has formed a 13 metre long cave in the sandstone exposure. The cave starts as a large niche, 4 metres wide, 4.7 metres high and 2.7 metres deep. In the right hand side of the niche is a crooked crevice, that, together with the niche, forms an 8 metres long cave.

Most likely, the Holy Spring obtained its namebecause of the curative properties attributed to its waters (It is said to cure pains of the joints, for example.) The water in the holy spring is rich in iron, and already in the 19th century, the spring was often mentioned in German and Latvian publications under the name 'Iron Gate'.
