Established in 1962 as the Jūrmala Regional Research Museum, the museum has changed its name and location several times. It has been located in Majori since 1997. The building was put up in the 1960s as a dry-cleaning facility, and it has since then been rebuilt for the needs of a museum.

The architect Indra Grietēna designed the remodelling job, which was performed in two rounds - the first in 1997, and the second in 2004. The museum`s collection contains nearly 52 000 objects grouped in categories such as history, art and underwater history. The building has several exhibition rooms, a permanent historical exhibition, a café, a gift shop, as well as facilities for seminars and conferences.
