Mezotne Hillfort, Wine Hill

Mezotne Hillfort is located on the left bank of the Lielupe River, opposite the centre of Mezotne. The hillfort is established on about 16 m high earth corner that is bordered with a steep bank of the Lielupe River in East and brook ravine in North. In West and South the hillfort is well fortified with two ramparts and moats. The biggest of them is almost 8 m high and 75 m long, formed on the western edge of the plateau. Second rampart encloses the hillfort in a semicircle from South and West, in a length of about 150 m. Entrance into the hillfort was placed at the Western hillside. Plateau is longish-shaped and its area is about 40X80 m. In North and Southwest there is an ancient settlement - town of total area of about 13 ha. In South this settlement flanks another, smaller hillfort - Vinakalns. Southeastern corner of the hillfort was the place of an ancient harbour. In accordance with the 13th century chronicles and documents, Mezotne Hillfort is supposed to be castrum Mesiothe, the most significant centre of Eastern part of Zemgale appanage.
