Cesis castle complex
Description
Explore Cēsis castle complex, the old town and the castle park with what were once the most impregnable fortifications of the Livonian Order in the Baltic region: the Cēsis medieval castle. Come and you will be told the castle’s history, and while listening to ancient legends by candlelight, you will be able to climb the castle tower, which provides a wonderful view of Gauja National Park. Cēsis medieval castle was one of the first stone fortifications built within the borders of ancient Latvia by German crusaders.
The complex of castle buildings, preserved throughout the centuries, should be regarded a landmark of monumental architecture, which reflects construction traditions and features of artistic styles from the Livonian period. The Cēsis castle, rebuilt and expanded on several occasions, acquired its current architectonic image in the early sixteenth century, when Wolter von Plettenberg erected the diagonal north and south towers, thus adapting the castle fortifications to the requirements of the age of firearms. Access to the castle was made more difficult by moats and three spacious foreparts surrounded by strong ramparts. The new Cēsis castle, which now houses the Cēsis Museum of History and Art, was built on the site of the gateway fortifications of the old order castle. At present, the castle barn is occupied by the Vidzeme Bowling Centre: a recreational centre is being developed there.
The stable building contains an art gallery. Since 2001, the Cēsis Tourist Information Centre has been housed in the coachman’s house of the manor. A Romantic-style landscape garden featuring a landscaped pond in the middle was created on the castle grounds.
